What started out as a simple organic garden to grow some veggies for us this winter, has turned out to be one massive job.

After getting the neighbour’s tractor in with a rotor tiller to turn in the mushroom compost & lime and to orginally break up the sod, and then again to turn in a load of sand.

I discovered that there was so many rocks in the soil that the rotor tiller didn’t get deep enough into the soil, on average 4 inches.

I had to revert back in time and do it the old fashion way with a shovel, finally after 4 1 /2 days of solid digging (40 hours) I got the tractor back to rotor till it again.

I will post a video of what it looks like once I have it planted, the soil turned out perfect like walking on air now.

Also the stone pile is freaking huge now! ———————————————-

Looks like a ROCK Garden to me, I sure don't envy you that job of removing and disposing of all those rocks.

Sure hope you find something useful to make out of them.

You should never till the ground. Tilling kills the soil

HealthSupercharger says:

are you saying that a 6hp rototiller is no good for ground with rocks??

TurtleTorials says:

Well you say that's hard, me and my family have to use a hand hoe to loosen up the soil and get rid of the rocks, which is like, hell. But I still have fun 🙂 That's what gardening is all about 😉

Stoney Ridge Farmer says:

good to see someone else has a ton of rocks on his homestead, check out stoneyridgefarmer. I'm using pigs and horse/cow manure to cover my spot that's full of rocks. We have some similar interest you should check out the page.

Jay Shriver says:

I'm here looking for an alternative to spading hundreds of square feet of soil for a new bed and what do I find; one pair of hands spading hundreds of square feet of soil! I hope this isn't some kind of sign.

Bill Kimp says:

You did a lot of work…I hope your growing effort is sucessful

Betty Dixon says:

after watching the series of video for the whole year. I order seeds in Jan 1, 2015 well the just got here today Feb 17th. They were not mailed which they told me. After several phone calls again they came today. HAPPY I was to get them. I open the bag that was empty. a big piece of tape with  US Customs written on it. There was a letter enclosed that said that there were some things missing to allow it to come to the US… ALL seed were confiscated and it says Prohibited Material removed and Destroyed reason were Material not authorized to entry   and Phyto-sanitary certificate is missing. So if you are ordering from this GREAT seed company from the US , DONT.  I am sad!

josé Pires says:

Outrjs says:

That's a lot of rocks! Looking good so far.

ELDK2008 says:

Very cool. Do you know any cheats? I'm unable to dig so, I was thinking I might box in an area, fill it with compost and bagged soil and grow things there this year that might send out deep roots and break up some of the soil with less work. Do you think it will work?  Either that or I can buy a rototiller. 🙂

crsbt says:

you americans have such alot of space,,although i wouldnt want to dig that lol.
looks really nice there and your garden im sure will be great.
happy digging sir.

redcrystal69 says:

That's a nice big area, but OUCH to digging it all out 🙁 I unfortunately can't do a lot of digging, so I have little raised beds. They suit us fine though 🙂 Good luck with your garden!!
